Deb's Bio
I remember the day I realised I wanted to be a teacher. I was 8…and I had been helping a younger child learn to read........we even had the buddy system way back then! It was the 70s!
Initially I trained as a kindergarten teacher and then went on to work in primary schools in the western suburbs of Melbourne. I have been teaching for 23 years and the great thing is, it has never been the same year twice!
I have taught all grade levels, had many specialist roles, [including eLearning], had numerous leadership roles, offered professional learning activities across the state, worked for the regional office and the centre and am now working as an Ultranet Coach for western metropolitan region. The wonderful part of this role is it’s full of possibilities; it’s all about helping our teachers prepare themselves and their students for the ever-changing, online world.
You might think it’s a long way from 4 year olds to computers…….but I wonder if it is. As a pre-school teacher, I found that children learnt best when they were engaged, when the lessons were relevant and meaningful, when they included hands-on, active involvement in the curriculum and when the learning was challenging and fun. You can’t fake it with a 4 year old! This knowledge has served me well in eLearning, across all age groups.
I see eLearning as using digital devices, applications and online tools to ensure deeper thinking and broader representations of learning in all curriculum areas. One day it will just be called Learning!
